love turned to stone!

there is a legend down here that goes like this: once upon a time in latvia, a man named edward leedskalnin fell madly in love with a beautiful girl named agnes. the night before their wedding, she cancelled the marriage due to presssure from her mother to marry a man set to inherit a farm down the road. edward was so broken hearted he left latvia and wandered around the US, eventually winding up in southern florida. determined to win her back, he decided to build her a castle.

he worked for 28 years, carving and moving 1100 tons of coral rock in his tribute to lost love. some of the boulders he stood are taller than those at stonehenge, and he did it all himself - only 5 feet tall and battling tuberculosis, with a 4th grade education. the rumors began to swirl: did he have alien assistance? was it built on a magnetic field linked to the bermuda triangle? did he really know the secrets of the great pyramids, as he claimed? could he truly levitate stone? nooooooooooo one knooooooooooooows!!!!!!!!!!

i love your blog! it's so great catching up with you!!!

yep-- I'm still in grad school (maybe i will be forever. i really like school) I'm moving to latvia to teach english, at least for a few months. then hopefully coming back and going to more grad school for creative writing (if I get in, if I can afford it-- so we'll see. i think i want to be a writing teacher) my thesis is on teh imagination. what the heck are you all doing? teaching too?

what aspect of the imagination? how long is it going to be? sometimes i miss school, maybe i'll assign myself a paper to write. :-)

yup, we're both teaching - i'm subbing right now, and matt is teaching high school english. we're going to be moving this summer though, so we're both looking for new jobs. pretty fun! i think it's awesome you're going to latvia. we applied to go to morocco to teach english for a year! however, we had to back out the day of our interview cause it would too-much delay our loan payments. :-( also something about the timing didn't feel right. i dont know. maybe some other time. hopefully.

so how did you pick latvia?

I don't think I'd go to Lativia or Morocco because I don't want my head shrunken or be had for dinner.

Jenny, you did really well on my quiz! Nice work. You came really close on some of my old-school questions, and remembered a lot. I was impressed! :-) Nobody is doing that well, though, so I think I made it too hard. :-(
