burning the old year

our school year is about to come to an end, which means it's time to kiss all this goodbye! (both of us lost our jobs due to low enrollment, which is very-much okay but means we have a lot of searching to do soon.)

the interview matt had, it's at the same school where i've been working ~ we should find out sometime next week!

I love the idea of burning the old year. Remind me to do it next year, or maybe I'll do it during Rodeo weekend. In good old Manawa that weekend is a bit of a landmark. You'll be okay, it sounds lame, but true. I know how much it sucks not knowing what will come next etc, but trust me, everything works out in the end. I have learned that when we are in positions like you are in right now, either God will change your situation for the better or He will change you for the bettter. Speaking of transtions, the school I am student teaching English at has an open postion in their Social Studies dept. (I will have dual cert in English and Social Studies). Please cross you finger for me and keep me in your prayers. I also applied for a position Iola, but I think I would rather be in Clintonville, even though I think Iola pays more.

ooh what i wouldn't give to teach social studies again! what grade level is it? also, which would you rather teach, history or english?

Here is a really long answer to a short question. The postion would be high school. I student taught eighth grade American history. Technically, the position is supposed to be an AP psych postion, and I don't have that credential. However I talked to the princinpal and the assistant principal, if I get the postion they may be able to do some shuffling while I pick up the minor and get the credential. So I would most likely teach history until then. There are drawbacks and benifits to both. Social studies has a lot of intial preperation. When I am teaching social studies I have to study a lot, take notes, and re-study my notes so my lecture is smooth, or so I can facilitate discussion well. Also I am always surprised how much random information eighth grade boys know about war, and the last thing you want is to be stumped by an eighth grader. I also read several sources to get a complete picture of what I am teaching. In edition, I have to develop tests and put slideshows together. I usually end up spending the weekends grading tests or projects, or both. However, these tasks get easier with time, once you have the slide show made you just need to add to it, once you have the test made you just need to revise it, and eventually you can do the lecture without notes. Grading even becomes easier when you get a system down. English is more as you go preperation, you still need to develop units, but there is a little thing called WebEnglishTeacher.com or LitPlans.com. I have to read and reread four novels at a time, but that's fun, don't get me wrong I find reading history fun too, but it's a different kind of reading when you are preparing a lecture. I like both, but I feel like I get to know my English students better because the nature of the class is discussing and writing their thoughts. I'm strong in both, I think I'm a little stronger in Social Studies. I would like this position in Clintonville though because I would get to teach my eighth graders again, and it would be cool to see how they grow over the next couple of years. I would like to teach American Studies eventually, which is a combination of American Lit and American History. So, in answer to your question, I'll take what I can get knowing that I like both.

oh geez megan, if you get him thinking out of state, he'll be headed off for arizona! it's still kinda cold up there for me :-( or we would definitely think about it. we miss you guys a lot! you have flair to spare!!!! :-)

heidi - american studies sounds awesome! for now, you could supplement a history course by having kids read real lit about the topic. you know those encyclopedia yearbooks? i don't know if they make them anymore... well in the back, they have a list of books of the year by category, like children's lit, etc. you find some really good stuff there - books that get buried by modern search engines but are very high quality, and relevant 'cause they were often written in the same time as the event happened. (they probably have these lists online somewhere too - i don't know.) anyway, good luck with your search. :-)

okay truthfully, i just wanna get out of here so bad, i'm so sick of the city. feels suffocating. just writing the word arizona reminded me of that. open space, air to breathe. i wish homestead wasn't so ridiculously crime-ridden. 600 murders last year??? otherwise we'd move there for sure. some place near the orange groves, where chickens walk around ~ ahhh.... if he gets that job, we'll be living a good 30-45 minutes away, and i'm not sure this city could ever feel like home.

I was thinking about those yearbooks the other day to use the articles out of them. Thank you for the hint.
