i cry wolf once again.

we have until friday to decide. it is official! it is officious!

what i do not like is the amount of risk involved in either option. i keep trying to pick the easy one, and then something comes up that makes it hard and it goes flying out the window. for example, we were all gung-ho about wisconsin, until we realized how hard it will be for me to find a job and i might end up waitressing for a year, at the end of which i might as well hang up my degree with the kind of resume i'll have. then we got really excited about florida, until we realized how hard it will be to find a program that will transfer to eau claire (and if we don't find a program that transfers it's kind of worthless, in that it will be a lot of work and a lot of money spent for something that does us little good in the long run.)

okay, and not only this, but there's no way we can figure out which one is the right choice in a week. no way for me to get a wisconsin job offer, or for matt to get set up in a program that's accredited up north. so i guess we just have to pick one, kind of blindfolded. like i said, i have until friday. doooooom day. (can you hear the theramin? i can.) makes my feet curl.

ps. isn't it funny how you're probably sitting there reading, thinking, "huh. just pick one. it'll be okay." and how you're absolutely right?

A hard thing about making major decisons like this is taking the emotions out of them and weighing the pros and cons objectively. Harder than that is dealing with the unknowns. And the hardest of all is quieting your life and listening for that still small voice.

I don't envy your position as we just passed through that valley of shadow and death ouselves {;~P) But I will say that on the other side of it your shoulders will be considerably lighter and you posture less stooped.

I have been told by many that I have a tendency to be indecisive. Gee, I don't know where they would get that from. Hmm... Anyway you'll be okay. Jenny please give yourself a little more credit, your resume is probablly better than you think. For one thing you have a few years teaching experience. It shows that you have expierence working with a diverse population. And you speak Spanish which is a plus for getting a job in Wisconsin lately, trust me I've been looking. And for the sixth time, Concordia and Marian are both accredited programs. Trust me, the guy I know that did the Marian program is far too practical to be in a program that would not be accredited. As for me, a little further down Northland Ave. at Concordia, they have mentioned time and time again that the program is accredited. Now I will drop that issue.

You'll be fine, more than fine, you'll be blessed! God will be with you no matter what your decision is in the end. I know what it is like to have people say "just pick one already." However the last thing that you want to do is jump to quickly into something. You need to know it is right. Speaking of people who are scared that they may not get a job in the state of Wisconsin. I know this really sweet somewhat quirky person in her mid-to late twenties named me that is worrying about the same thing. Please pray that I get a job that I like where I am happy and can bloom. I'll pray the same for you.

Hello! This is Laurie's little sister Melissa!

Of course I remember you! I remember going to your apartment in Eau Claire a lot and I'm pretty sure you once braided a small part of my hair and wove string around it so it looked pretty!

Thank you for posting on my blog it was nice to hear from you!

The Goodfellas said...

ha ha! a hairwrap! i think i only had kinda dingy thread instead of the pretty string though, as i recall. one of my great regrets in life.

:-)

You can always sub in Wisconsin if you don't find a job. I heard you get sub jobs pretty often, if not everyday, if you're in the fox valley.

The Goodfellas said...

subbing... yup. two steps forward, two steps back. oh, the timeless words of paula abdul.

abby, for real, do you know of any openings? i checked on the website and it said there are none! so i figure they just don't update often..? also, are there any bilingual schools in the area that you know of?

heidi - six times, huh. wow. okay. can you email me some addresses? i sent an email to some generic address i found on the website, but i'm not sure who it'll go to.

jason! i can't wait til i quit stooping. :-)

Aaron said...

Move to WI. Both go back to school. Take a few grad credits and sub. That way it will look good on your resume. "I subbed because i was taking some grad credits" Then you'll also have a better change at getting a job.

appleton's got a heck of a union huh??!! wow. it's like sylvester stallone himself set it up. (anyone else see that movie...?)
:-)

So. assuming i won't break into the appleton district this year (although i'm still applying, once they start accepting applications), i've started looking into the milwaukee area. i found a bilingual school! fun! right now i'm applying in german-town! Even MORE fun!!!

that is my update! :-)

The Goodfellas said...

ps. aaron, that is a really good fall-back plan. thanks. :-)

kelly said...

aaron, i agree. it does look really good!

please keep us up to date with what you're thinking, jen!! we're praying so much for you guys!!!!!

I'm assuming you already know what websites to check for teaching jobs in Wiscosin, but here they are anyways.

www.wisconsin.gov then click on "employment in wisconsin" on the right hand side of the screen
AND
https://services.education.wisc.edu/wecan/

The Goodfellas said...

thank you madamoiselle! i just started my WECAN thing tonight, but i didn't know about the .gov one. :-)

kelly - and you? any news..?

The Goodfellas said...

kelly said...

heidi_go_lightly said...

Yay for Appleton! Good luck with your decision to become...something! I'm saying a quick prayer for you now, since it's Friday here now I figure I'm still enough ahead of the game to send my two cents up there for ya!

cheers!

.............drumroll.............
we have made a decision!!!!
we are moving to wisconsin, either in the appleton area or the milwaukee area (wherever I get a job). matt is going to study for 1 semester at a state school and polish his minor up into a major, and then he'll start the 15 month program at concordia! (he'll end up dual-certified for art and english.) so, in a year and a half he'll be finished! (YAY!) then, perhaps malaysia? :-) who can say?!

i'm already kind of trying to prepare for the fact i might not find a job, so i'm looking into some other options. not actively. but thinking about it. ;-) but please pray that i do find something, because it really is what lights me up. i swear, i am the laziest person in the world, except when i'm a teacher. :-)

thank you to everyone for your prayers and advice!!!

mr. goodman said...

Lazy! Not even close. Folks, you should know that what I have here is one VERY hard working woman. She does it all. I would be a sniveling low-level mail boy at an advertising firm right now if it weren't for her. It's true that teaching lights her up, but she isn't lazy without it. It is pink icing on the cake.

Thank you, everybody, for keeping us in your prayers. God has completely steered us on this one. I have to say, I have never felt more led at any time in my life, and that's saying something, because I was definitely led to Jenny.

So I guess we have some packing to do! :)

heidi_go_lightly said...

you may want to try applying at some smaller districts around Appleton too as a way to get your foot in the door

The Goodfellas said...

yeah! matt was just telling me that... i didn't realize that those cities weren't clumped together with appleton! (yay!)

so heidi, where are you applying?

ningyo said...

Oh Appleton is SO nice! Maybe you could work at Melissa and Brian's old grade school

kel said...

jen, check your email. i just sent you a message. :)

heidi_go_lightly said...

Today I'm working on my application stuff for Wittenberg-Birnamwood (a small town between Wausau and Green Bay) and Bayport High School, which is in a suburb of Green Bay. I'm trying to stick around east central Wisconsin, (45 min. from Clintonville) but I'll take a teaching job almost anywhere that pays me in money-- and not even in large sums of money--and where I can get health insurance.

misdemeanor here said...

yay!!!
you're coming back!!!!
if you need a place to stay... *wink wink*.
even though i'm really not that close to concordia.

Brian and/or Megan said...

Congratulations! You should out that in an actual post instead of a comment to another post because I've been checking your blog for other Posts with your decision!
We've been having a great time with Mom and Dad. I should be posting again tomorrow.

The Goodfellas said...

oh no!!!! as of today we are unsure again!!!!!!!!! but in a good way. :-)

the headmaster at my school met with us today, they want to hire me for the spanish job with a payraise (ee!). if i take it, matt would take his 12 credits down here (those art and lit classes he needs) - going fulltime for one semester, and then work 2nd semester (either teaching, or whatever else he feels like) it would delay us only 1 semester at concordia, since he would've started in the spring, and would be starting in the fall this way.

i told the headmaster that if i take it, i will only be there a year and he said that was fine. so.... who knows? i wonder, is getting a year of good experience worth delaying it one semester? i think so!!!!!! (matt isn't sure!) what do you think?

Hi Matt and Jenny,
It is Connie Van Houten and I guess you know who that is. It gets very old always having to go back to school to get re-certified so if Florida will not get Matt certified anywhere but there I would head back from where you came. It would open many more doors for both of you to have Matt certified all over the USA. Jenny you are a talented, kind and intelligent young lady. You got a raw deal with the first job in Florida and that does not say anything about the person that you are. Let it go and move on. You are a special person who would be a gift to any school who is lucky to have you as a teacher. You may have to work at grade levels that are not your first choice and move up the ladder but you will do great! Good luck and maybe we will see you again here in Washington. Connie

i don't have any exceptional words of wisdom, and i can't quote the bible at all, but i can cast my vote for wisconsin.
because florida is lame and because i can guarantee you, jenny, that a school in wisconsin will not fire you for being too white. we love white people. and cheese. and miller lite.

also, you guys are awesome and i miss the both of you.

good luck.

The Goodfellas said...

ha!
you're funny. :D

ps. it is impossible that mr. traveller finds florida to be lame. do you not long to get snapped at by a gator? :)

Oh my! Such drama! And now such suspense! It's just like a season finale cliffhanger! I'm teeeeeming with anticipation to find out where God leads you. If you guys move back to the Fox Valley we could hang out ALL the time and just DISH! (ha ha--j/k).

(I did hear the theramin, btw)...

Kelli said...

Whoa, where have I been? :-) It took me like an hour to read all this stuff (just kidding).

I'M SO PUMPED YOU GUYS ARE MOVING BACK TO WISCONSIN! I can't wait to all get to gether "and just DISH!" ha ha... I always LOVED that phrase, too.

Anyway, do call/e-mail/etc. when you're back!!
