I apologize.

Poor little Lucas, naked online. I swear this will be the only time. But isn't he so cute when he gets a bath and isn't he so cute when he cries and isn't he so cute when he flails his little arms? My goodness.

Little man's dedication

Lucas was dedicated in church on sunday! It was such a proud moment to stand up front with my husband and my son. It reminded me of our wedding -- the gravity of all the things you're vowing to do. Matt held him up for everyone to see, just like Simba (or, if you're of the Kung Pow! Enter the Fist persuasion, just like Cho-simba. Anyone, anyone?)
Although my little man has gained 2 pounds, none of it has gone to his legs, which goes to show he's got some Mcfall blood flowing in there. Who knew my baby would be Scotch?

my poor little scuppernong.

i was going to write something kind of flippant, such as:

Q: what do lucas and ashlee simpson have in common?
A) acid reflux B) an older sister named jessica C) a nose job
.
and leave it at that, not much more stated, because i tried to type out the long story and it got too long, and writing about it almost makes me cry. but i can't be so flippant about my little lucas, so i will try to write it again.
.
on saturday, we found lucas in his crib in a puddle of pink vomit. his diapers were bloody too, and so we took him to the ER where he spent his one-month birthday. after about 5 hours (and 10 blood-taking attempts on his tiny veins), they sent us home with the advice to put him on a special formula and see how he does. he stopped bleeding within 12 hours, so we thought he was all better. but then on sunday night, he stopped breathing. he had just finished his bottle, and normally i would have laid him down in his crib and hopped back into bed (so so tired, like always) but instead i sat up cuddling him for a long time. and then, instead of rushing to bed, i decided to boil up a pot of water and sanitize his bottle (which i didn't need to do, since he had other bottles ready, and didn't really make sense to do at that hour anyway.) and then, instead of going straight to bed, i decided to go in and check on him. and when i walked in, there he was, laying in his crib, stiff as a board and choking. not making any noise, just silently choking.
.
it took forever before i got him to take a breath, and i sat there holding him and crying, and then he did it again. it was so horrible -- he stares up at you with these terrified eyes. this time i couldn't get him to breathe, so i screamed for matt, who came running (and sprained his ankle on the way.) matt was pounding on his back and still he didn't breathe, so he pinched him, trying to get him to scream or react in some way. finally he took a gasp of air and then stopped breathing again. this happened 4 times in a row. we set him into his carseat to take him to the ER, and then he did it again. it was so awful -- he was strapped down and it seemed like forever before our shaking hands could pull him out. we called 911 because we weren't sure if we could get him to the hospital in time if it happened again. since i'm trying to write this concisely, i'll skip to the end and say that 3 EMTs, 5 doctors, and 20-some nurses later, they let me bring my lucas home from the hospital.
.
they figured out that he has acid-reflux, and his pain reaction is to go stiff and stop breathing. when most babies spit up, they turn their head to the side and it drains out on its own. but since he goes stiff, his nose and mouth are covered in it -- and then 30 seconds later when he tries to gasp in a breath, he can't. so they have him on a reflux medication which should take care of everything.
.
i am so so so glad that i didn't go to bed that night like i normally would -- and all those times that i was about to, i changed my mind. i am so thankful that God allowed me to walk in and find him just when he needed me -- just exactly when he needed me. he wouldn't have made it otherwise, which is almost too painful to even say.
.
so. the answer is A.
.
and my lucas is home and okay now and for a moment, everything is right in the world.

L.M.J.G.

There is a woman in my life, lovely and strong, who can do just about anything. She can speak two languages. She can melt my heart with her smile. She can post pictures in logical procession in this blog, which I obviously cannot do myself. She can even overcome fear and pain to bring life into this nutty world of ours, and she continuously makes it lovelier.
Did you know that Lucas Marco Jonathan would not have lived through birth without the incredible efforts of my beautiful wife? She's a lifesaver. And the boy and I really adore her. And she and I really adore our boy. इ लोवे यू, हनी. That means I love you, in Hindi.

what implications!

this goodman duo suddenly realized it might be a teeny bit tricky to perform our pairs ice routine with a third member. do they even let trios perform at the olympics? no sir, they do not. so we are curious to see how this will play out as we "skate through life." (i know you are rolling your eyes - that is okay. it is a terrible, terrible metaphor.)

okay, all this to say, we are trying to decide on something special to do this weekend! because it will be our last weekend together with just the two of us! (most likely!) we might:

*go to devil's lake and have a picnic (never been there!) (and you can go and not really hike right? right?)

*go to a haunted house! spoooooooooooky! i said to matt, what if i get scared and i go into labor? and he said "that'd be awesome!" (he is antsy for the little guy to arrive -- we ate very spicy food last night and he didn't even want me to drink milk, for fear that ... oh, i don't know, something about capseasin (sp?) counterreacting something, rendering the plan inutil?)

*go to an apple orchard and maybe ride a hayride and maybe go in a corn maze and maybe have cider?

*go to that cave where you get to paddle around in a canoe and duck under the stalagmites. (or is it the stalagtites?) okay we probably won't do that because i don't know where it is and i probably shouldn't be climbing down into a cave. i know, i know...

i think that's it. what do you think we should do? or do you have some other suggestion? do tell!

when do you think

he will arrive?

(the doctor said he could be born at any moment! or he could wait for two weeks! (nooooooo!) we are very ready to meet him!)

and who do you think he will look like?

(i think he will have matt's eyes and we can only hope he will have matt's sideburns.) ;-)

and what do you think his middle name should be?

(can you believe we still don't have that figured out??!)

things are looking up!

some of you may not have known, but matt unfortunately lost his job about a month and a half ago due to a back injury. since then, we have been praying very much that God would help him find a new job and that his back would heal (it was so bad, he couldn't even sit, so it made it hard for him to find work.) so, we are very happy to say that God has answered our prayers -- we are back on a steady paycheck, and matt likes his job, and his back is feeling pretty good lately. i am so very proud of him, because he is juggling full-time classes at concordia, plus a british lit class at fox valley, plus working full-time. he has to get up at 4 am to get everything in and i am just so proud of him, for the way he works so hard for us. when we dated, i thought he was putting his best foot forward. when we got married i found that he does indeed have another side, but that it's even better than the first. so i guess i just want to say in front of everyone, thank you matthew for everything you do. and thank you God for answering our prayers, for being with us during this hard time, and for giving me such an amazing husband.

matt says...

that he thinks we're ready to take that next "big step" in our relationship. so he brought home fish! please join me in warmly welcoming manuel (with the black stripe on his back) and cake girl (the polite little orange and white one) into our family. (alas, the turnip has already passed on. he just wasn't well, poor fellow.) :-(

fy is terribly, terribly interested in the fish. he sits at the bottom of the shelf staring and staring. i think sometimes he forgets what he was staring at, and we find him with his gaze fixed to the clock or perhaps an empty bottle of Leninade.

anyway. so. that is that. we have lovely fish. :-)

it's like waiting for Christmas! kind of!

so, only 5 weeks left until our baby boy makes his debut into this world! i have never looked forward to cool weather before, but now the chill in the air tells me that october is drawing near which means that he will be here soon soon soon! (that's a bit of a lie -- mostly i still want it to be hot out so i can go float in the river in an innertube. me and my big belly, floating southerly.)

we gave fy a haircut (very short!) he is left with only ear fluffs and a rooster tail. as a result he gets very cold and tremulous at night, so matt sometimes bundles him into his tee-shirt. clearly he is a natural when it comes to fatherhood. :-)

three cheers for ...

friends! one of the things matt and i realized when we left florida is that somehow we had managed to not make any friends when we were down there. quite literally! there was no one to say goodbye to (although we did stop at publix to say goodbye to the sample lady and the seafood guy.) it's funny how sometimes you don't realize you're lonely until you're around people -- then it is like a great sigh of relief. which is just how we felt when we saw laurie and ryan last week! so nice, so so nice. i so much hope they stay (hint hint hint.) :-)

all ready for his arrival!

(i think?!)

on saturday, my parents and the goodmans surprised us with the most wonderful gift! a beautiful crib for our little guy! they even set it up for us!

this is getting so so so so so so so exciting! i am very pleased too, because my little son is very strong, and has taken to playing my ribs as though they were a xylophone. a little painful, but i am so proud. :-)

and by the way, my sweet mamita took me to get a haircut! the plume has been cut off! cast to the winds! what a weekend. :-)

Monday, August 20, 2007

it all started when...

matt bought me an apron. next came a pair of matching peep-toe pumps (teal) to wear in the kitchen.

now i throw dinner parties galore!

noriega, where have you been all my life?

so noriega took power of panama in 1983, and then was ousted by the US in 1989 (what a year!) and now, suddenly, he resurfaces again! do you wonder where he's been? in jail in miami! in miami all these years! and now he's due to be released on september 9th at the grand ol' age of 72, and some people worry he will return to panama and reclaim his throne. (unlikely, unlikely says i.)

i just had no idea he was incarcerated in the US all this time (i honestly didn't even know that could happen). i wonder: did he have a cellmate? (probably not if somehow even paris hilton got out of having one right?) did he carry a shank in his sock? did he make a tiny chessboard? did people know who he was? did he lift weights out on the yard? did he feel bad for what he had done or was he planning his next revolution these past 18 years? did he write a manifesto? did he get to watch tv while locked up and if so did he watch sabado gigante? (and did he see the mother's day episode that i was in the audience of? and did he have a different favorite in the hot mamacita contest? because i kind of think the wrong lady won.) does he admire chavez and will they meet? was he a fan of prison break? are they even allowed to watch that in prison? does he feel as though he has been cryogenically frozen all this time and is suddenly stepping out to a whole new world or is it all the same old same old to him? and if he had been incarcerated in the phillippines would he have participated in the dancing of "thriller"? there is just so much i would like to know.

oh no! someone noticed!

that there was a welcome post to kelly and fernando and now it's been deleted! well, not because they are not welcome. far from true! it just was pretty boring, and they are deserving of a more exciting post. so, it will have to wait until further notice. well, okay. nevermind. here they are, because it is a cute picture. welcome! :-)
and now! a bit of news! matt has been looking for a new job. would you not want to hire him on the spot? hmm? i would. i think i just did.
and maybe you wonder how big my belly is getting? well i will show you! oh my! (i apologize for wearing a rumpled slip. how embarrassing.)

the bridge collapse

kelly and fernando had been living at an apartment a half a block from the bridge that went down, and they used to cross it a half a dozen times a day. they moved from that apartment just two days ago, no longer with a need to go over that bridge. i am so thankful that they are okay, so relieved. (did you see that video of the bridge going down? it was so awful.)

let's all remember to pray for all the people affected by this tragedy.

romance is in the air!

it's early july, and i think we've been to five weddings so far this summer. and what i love is that each wedding has its moment, the part that you won't forget. i think at kelli's it was when they said their vows, so very choked up, and seeing kelli's face when they were pronounced husband and wife (she just lit up!) and then at the reception of course it would have to be watching her dance to n'sync. :-) (okay and i will always think of cake when i think of kelli's wedding, since it was just to die for and through some finnagling i got to try five different flavors. one of the definite perks of having a nice round little pregnant belly - no one wants to deny you food.) :-)

so anyway, i am curious: what was your favorite part of your wedding? and your reception?

How I want to learn Farsi!

I just finished reading The Kite Runner and it is so so so good. So good.

I was telling my mom the basic plot over breakfast and in the car, and by the time we were headed home we were both crying... And not only is it a beautiful story, it is set against the most amazing backdrop of the past 30-some years in Afghanistan and is worth a read if only just for that. (Should I tell you what happens in it? Should I?) This is from Wikepedia:

The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do Pashtun boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, who is haunted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan, the son of his father's Hazara servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime.

Sounds so intriguing, right?

Okay. So: Have you read anything good lately?

so many firsts on the fourth! (how unseemly, i know)

*i made my first ever nectarine pie!
*matt spent the day doped up due to a bad headcold, not saying much and at intervals talking too loudly. (did anyone else notice that?) i think the fourth was the first time he took a five hour nap?
*we finally got to try the much-lauded deep fried turkey which was every bit as good as it had been proclaimed to be!
*hmm, here's a first (at least for us.)
*jon injected my dad full of some kind of brown liquid. and, look what he did to his forehead. suffice to say this had never occurred at a family gathering before.
*maybe the first time two american men celebrated the fourth by wearing panama hats?

all in all, a spectacular day!
