There are other,

perhaps more fitting (and certainly less blurry) pictures with which to announce our newest news. (That's right! I said news!) But this is my favorite because very much accidentally, our postures seemed to capture exactly how we feel. I am pregnant! Holy smokes completely wonderful I can't believe it wow!!!

November 3rd, 2008

November 3rd, 2008 was a beautiful sunny day with the temperature in the lower 70’s. Still fearing another winter like last year, I decided to take off work early to go out to the farm and cut firewood. Matt was still at his class at 4:00, but I asked Monse and Jenny to bring out Lucas and all the fixings for tin foil dinners after I got done. I went down to the start of the pasture just past where the large gooseberry bushes used to be, drove by the bend in the creek where a grove of elm trees stood, and ended up at the beginning of the woods, just across the creek from the flat valley where we got sod for Ray Welk when he moved into his new house on Grant Street.

That summer was the first time I remember eating donuts! Yes it’s true! Ray would bring us white bags of warm orange glazed donuts down to the woods to keep us boys going. He rented a sod cutter to strip the sod with as us boys rolling it up and then loading it onto the flatbed wagon about three rows high, later heading into town. Did that tractor ever fly down Hying hill and over the Little Platte River with a heavy load behind it! I remember washing the 806 up really shiny; I mean we couldn’t take a dirty tractor to town! Ray, who was also the song leader at our church, had a daughter my age named Joann. She was kind of quite and her friend was Doris Edge who was more outgoing than Joann ever would be. She even smiled at me once! O.K., we’ll keep Doris out of the story!!! I had cavalier thoughts about Joann that never came true. She never came out of the house to see us with our perfect suntanned backs unloading the sod, or even to see our red tractor. I doubt that she even knew that it had a TA!!! Girls, who can figure them out?

Just as it was getting dark out over the hill came Jenny in her little Ford Aspire with Monse, Lucas, Fyodor (their dog) and Lorena (their cat). Soon we had a nice fire going with tin foil dinners sizzling away. There is a nice apple tree up the valley a little ways and I asked Jenny if she’d like to go for a little walk to pick a few for supper. As we set off I just couldn’t help but feeling so happy, it was a beautiful night, I could see Monse down the valley playing by the fire with Lucas. Fyodor was chasing Lorena around until he caught her and was growling as he had her in the clutch of his jaw…just the way a dog should play. The apple tree had big red sweet apples that still shone by the moonlight, and there was a sprinkling of stars all around. As we started back to the fire I told Jenny that it was one of the best days of my life, I had everything a man could want. She stopped and asked me what I meant by that. I said that it was November 3rd and even at night I was wearing a tee shirt, my truck was full of firewood, I had a wonderful smelling dinner waiting for me, the moon was beautiful with the stars, Monse was laughing with my grandchild, I had a nice apple in my hand, and she was there. I told her that the only thing that was missing was to have Kelly and Fernando there, and that I hoped that Matt would get there soon. The moonlight was on her face as she said “Papi, I’m only telling you this because you said it was the best day of your life, but your day is going to get better…I’m pregnant!!!” “We were going to keep it a secret for a while longer, but I had to tell you tonight!” I have to admit that tears came to my eyes once again.
