kissed by a monkey!

does anyone remember the song "kissed by an angel" by sunny day real estate? well it's been in my head all day. why? because today, my friends, God smiled upon me.
i was moseying about the fair with matt, and THERE, right between the deep-fried-oreos-cart and the 26 inch woman, was..... a monkey in a vest. for a mere quarter, this monkey would shake your hand. for a mere *dollar* he would kiss your cheek! it is possible that my entire life was building up to this moment.

everything for fyodor: part II

this is in case any of you worried that fyodor had run out of strange poses. his newest thing, as you can see, is laying on his back, curled! and the strangest part is, he managed to fall asleep like this during lost!

the swamp!

matt and i went to the swamp last weekend, satisfying (for the moment) his desire to see a gator. it turns out they're hosting some sort of valentine's day celebration at the swamp in a few weeks! there's going to be live music, and free canoe rides! so we're excited to go. we want so bad to buy a kayak now! we saw people last weekend kayaking in the ocean - they went right up over the waves and everything. it was so aewsome. anyway, we figure, what could be better than paddling around the everglades and the ocean? (provided we don't get eaten?) :-)

today at the beach, we encountered many Man-O-War Jellyfish. It was really something. It was very beautiful and very sad at the same time, because the fact that we could see these creatures up close meant that they were doomed. I tried to carry one back out to see, but something stung me!

Oh, I kid, I kid. I make a joke. I carried it in a bucket as I am well aware that jellyfish sting. That is, some jellyfish sting. The ones I stick to my chest do not. And it's not as if the ones that do sting do it on purpose. But coming back to what I was saying, I couldn't take it far enough out to sea to ensure its safety. At least I tried! I am noble.

Animal Fact of the Day:
The Blue Whale, generally considered to be the largest living animal, has such large blood vessels that a full-sized trout could easily swim through its veins and arteries.

she is the owl that has burrowed into my heart

Hi-ho, Matthew the Great here.

Today, instead of teaching, I got to go to a seminar held at a local nature center (the Okeeheelee Nature Center, to be exact. right down the street from my school). Between lectures/videos/presentations, I wandered, and lo! I beheld a burrowing owl. The little thing was in a cage, and when I approached it, it stared me down nervously, and jumped into a hole when I got closer. Its peering little eyes and skittish demeanor somehow reminded me of my sweet wifey. :)

Additionally, I was hissed and snapped at by a baby alligator, almost fed a really big bird a french fry from my hand (but changed my mind when I decided I wanted all ten fingers), and I had half a mind to steal a turtle.
