drumroll, please....

i have been reading newsweek for the last 22 years. in my baby album is a picture of me at around age 3, reading newsweek while sitting on a little plastic potty. so you see i do not exaggerate. (although let's be honest, back then i mostly looked at the political cartoons.) anyway, for 20-some years i have been wanting to submit an article to newsweek, a "my turn" to be specific. and today? today i have accomplished something important. i have submitted my first letter to the editor. i have written 3 in my life, but never sent them, as they tend to come out to hot-sounding, and i can picture my mom saying "please watch your tone." what article has inspired this land-mark occurrence, you might ask? fareed zakaria's "what the world really wants" (and this follow-up) from the may 29th issue. what do you think..? about this or that or anything remotely related?

a charade parade!

last night kelly and fernando invited us over for pizza and wings and tres leches and charades! we were acting out movies - i think in this picture (from left to right) they are showing honey i shrunk the kids, mars attacks, twister, and jurassic park. matt, by the way, makes a really convincing t-rex!

kelly kelly kelly.... at one point this was her guess: "a python searches for the wine of Jesus?" anyone know what it is..? ;) or perhaps you can solve this riddle!: a naked muscley guy in california who shoots guns?

my mom is too cute

1. i wish i was the type of person who could wear big hats. especially at an angle like that. what do they say in "pretty in pink"? a girl in a hat, so vogue.

2. i am so glad that we're moving up in good weather. it will make it much easier to come! look how green! look how beautiful! i can overlook the fact that it is a cruel facade.

3. speaking of facades: i was surprised to find that most bilingual schools don't check my spanish! i was telling my dad last night that i think its 'cause of my tan! here i waltz in looking all hispanic... wait 'til the winter comes and my true palor shines through! my dad said they will shriek "oh no! we've hired a cracker!" ;-)

sayonara! adieu!

i'm abandoning my roost today, flying up north for 5 days for some interviews (hopefully when i get back we'll know which city we're headed to this summer!)

anyway, i was thinking about how much i'm going to miss my matthew when i realized: we've been married for almost 3 years!!! holy smokes! when did that happen!? that's an eighth of my life!

i will also miss my tiny fyodor. i tried to talk matt into letting me bring him but it is too expensive. plus, matt will want someone to eat pizza with, and to play video games with, and to watch horror movies with... (fyodor has a special affinity for werewolf movies - all the howling...)

so strange! so true!

strange but true, the trivia game that swept the nation, is over!

however, i have 1 prize left over, unaccounted for! so here is a challenge: whoever can tell the most strange fact will win the prize!

but believe me you, it's gotta be good! on-level with "when attacked, the sea cucumber shoots out its own intestines, so that the predator gets tangled up. it later regrows new ones." okay... go!

two fabulous quotes

by silvio berlusconi (prime minister of italy):

"only napoleon did more than me - but i am certainly taller than him."

"those judges are doubly mad! in the first place, because they are poitically mad, and in the second place, because they are mad anyway."

i think this guy should be the definition of swagger. him and my matt goodman. i would like some of that - maybe for Christmas next year.

Never trust a woman in a mask.

When I get around to running down here, I go around 5:10 am, and I see a lot of raccoons. Not one member of Florida's native raccoon population is pink. They are all a pretty standard shade of grey/brown, just like those you find in the Midwest. The raccoon with whom I share my life, love, and domecile still remains the most unique and colorful example of her kind that I have ever met, and she persists in warming me into a giddy state of euphoria even to this day.

(in no particular order)
1. open a meatball (and assorted spherical foods) restaurant
2. screenplays, screenplays, screenplays!
3. join the circus (as teachers, but we'd sneak onto the trapeze at night)
4. teach in Morocco
5. sign to barsuk records
6. build a house! on stilts? perhaps a concrete dome? who can say!?
7. procure a sibling for Fyodor, preferrably a white-handed gibbon
8. run a marathon (Matt, not Jenny)
9. be on Survivor or Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

And what about you?

i cry wolf once again.

we have until friday to decide. it is official! it is officious!

what i do not like is the amount of risk involved in either option. i keep trying to pick the easy one, and then something comes up that makes it hard and it goes flying out the window. for example, we were all gung-ho about wisconsin, until we realized how hard it will be for me to find a job and i might end up waitressing for a year, at the end of which i might as well hang up my degree with the kind of resume i'll have. then we got really excited about florida, until we realized how hard it will be to find a program that will transfer to eau claire (and if we don't find a program that transfers it's kind of worthless, in that it will be a lot of work and a lot of money spent for something that does us little good in the long run.)

okay, and not only this, but there's no way we can figure out which one is the right choice in a week. no way for me to get a wisconsin job offer, or for matt to get set up in a program that's accredited up north. so i guess we just have to pick one, kind of blindfolded. like i said, i have until friday. doooooom day. (can you hear the theramin? i can.) makes my feet curl.

ps. isn't it funny how you're probably sitting there reading, thinking, "huh. just pick one. it'll be okay." and how you're absolutely right?
