Did you say do pull down the tree or don't pull down the tree?

Mr. Travieso understands me! I know I should be getting used to this by now, but I still think it's amazing! (You see? Two exclamatory sentences in a row!) Last night he learned the word nariz, but I thought maybe it was a fluke. So today I was across the room playing with his blocks, and I said "Lucas, toca mi nariz" and he came all the way over to me and touched my nose (with his little pointer finger, very cute.) He also knows boca, which I don't say as often because I don't especially like wet fingers in my mouth. My favorite thing of all, though, is suave. I taught him to touch my face gently (because he thought it was fun to pound me with a block), and now whenever I say "suave, suave" he comes up to me and cradles my face in his hands and gives me the sweetest little kisses. I think I said that was my favorite? Oh no! My favorite is I ask him "Quien soy yo?" (Who am I?) and he answers "mama" in the sweetest little high-pitched but husky voice*. It just melts me. He also knows saca la lengua, guarda tus juguetes, bajate, vaya donde la mama (my grandma speaks to him in the usted and I in the tu), caramelo, guacala, botalo, te caes, cuidado, caliente, ven aca, traeme el libro, leche, agua, oveja, dame un besito, acuestate, parate, comelo, toma, llevaselo, daselo, nieve, and of course no (which he pretends he doesn't know.) He is not only smart but clever, you see?

*Speaking of which, would you like to hear him talk? He delivered quite a speech just yesterday. I think he was expressing his views on Blagojevich's recent conduct. (And in case you want to hear just a bit more, here you go! What merited such shrill discourse? Your guess is as good as mine!)

Things you can do with four teeth...

...(even if two of them are the size of a grain of rice sliced in two):
You can eat a turkey leg!
You can bite peoples' toes!
You can say new words! (I don't think technically the front teeth are used to say "agua" but it cannot possibly be coincidental.)
You can eat candy corn in half the time it normally takes!
You can take four steps all on your own! (Lucas told me without the teeth he just felt like such a baby, and thusly it seemed fitting for him to crawl.)

Introducing Jack...

...the longest cat in the world! The daschund of cats! Mr. O'Lantern himself, whose paws reach from one end of Matt's shoulders to the other!
Or is that Jack on the right, and sweet Lorraine on the left? Now I can't remember.

O Tannenbaum!

New family pictures!

Turns out I'm closer to ten weeks along! Which means two and a half months! Which means almost done with the first trimester! They measured the Lentil, and he (she?) is already 3 1/2 centimeters long, from head to tush. It's a good thing they don't measure legs, because sweet little baby was kicking and flipping and doing all kinds of cute things. I'm pretty sure I saw him (her?) sign "I love you." Yes, I'm almost certain.

Baby in a box!

Creepy or cute? Who can say! At a glance, one was supposed to look at this and say "A baby in a radiator box! Ha!" but instead it kind of looks like a precursor to a magic trick. The kind where someone appears to be separated in two (to say it delicately). Cute yet kind of unsettling, like this!
Well, all I can say is he liked it in there. Grandpa Tall slid him all around the floor shortly thereafter, and then they shared a half of a candy corn. Grandpa Tall always has the best ideas.

I thought I'd have to wait at least a few years before I felt like I really knew knew my son. I had no idea that a little one year old could be so ridiculously funny, that he could make me laugh a real laugh. And he knows when he's being funny too, and is intentional, and that's one of the best things about it. He is more and more his own person, which is a marvel to me.

I'm thankful for my Lentil! I guess most of my pregnancy thoughts so far have been rather vain (my hair is so shiney and pretty! I get to wear Mary Perez's shirt that I forgot to wear last time! etc.) but I suspect that once I have a belly I will think more appropriate motherly thoughts. Still. I am grateful to have shiney hair for seven more months, and I won't take it back!

I am grateful for my Matthew, who works so hard and is so fun (I mean fun!), who plans fun things like roasting marshmallows in our woodstove when Lucas has gone to bed, who is sneaking towards me right now which means I should probably go.

I am so thankful to the Lord who has given me all good things in life. And I am thankful for so much more, but like I said, now he is here and is wanting to go home and celebrate Fridayness so now I am finished.*

*A terrible lie! I have like six minutes more! I am thankful for my mamita, who takes care of Boo in the mornings when I am nauseous. I'm thankful for my papi, who gave Matt a really great job and always finds interesting things to say about my cooking. I'm thankful for my abuelita, who will do just about anything I ask, even posing by Santa for a picture when she didn't want to. I'm thankful for my in-laws, for Jon who loves to steal my Newsweeks** and who clearly gave Matt maybe 7/10's of his personality, and for Betsy who is always encouraging and has the most sneaky and subtle sense of humor. I'm thankful for Kelly and Megan, who arranged me a marriage and are the best sisters in the world. I'm thankful for Fyo and Jack and Lorraine and so much more but this time I really am cutting myself off.***

**You know that's a good person right there!

***Except to say that I am thankful. And I love footnotes. I'm grateful for them too.

He has a heck of a life, he does.

Let me tell you why. He gets his hair cut surrounded by oohing and aahing grandpas and grandmas (five in total!) who all saved snippets of his golden hair to treasure and to mail to distant relatives. I don't know about you, but the last time I got my hair cut, it was a semi-hack job in front of the bathroom mirror. Not that I'm asking anyone to come and applaud, mind you*. I'm just saying.

*For the record, my next haircut is coming up in about 3 weeks. If you would like a lock of my hair, please send a self-addressed-stamped-envelope and I will attend to the matter in a timely fashion.

Let it be known that...

more people would rather see Fyodor on Ice than the Beatles and the Stones combined! Fyo, I tip my hat to you!

This is a cheerier picture

in honor of my Lentil.

But now, back to Lucas! We discovered a new favorite food of his last night: lychees! We went to a Hmong banquet, and he went wild over them. Also couldn't get enough sesame buns, spring rolls, papaya salad, spicey pork with rice noodles, and pink layered rice cake. And for lunch, he had rice, sardines, and spinach! Para el no hay pan malo.

I am curious if the Lentil will have the same wide range of tastes as Lucas. Is it nature or is it nurture? We shall see!

Oh Lentil, how I love thee.

I was struck by an apple the day I found out I was pregnant. That morning I woke up feeling weak and sickly, so I scraped myself out of bed and went to brush my teeth. The sight of the toothpaste foam made me gag, which I brushed off because come on, that is always disgusting. This, however, was immediately followed by the thought "I would LOOOOVE a peanut butter sandwich." I must be pregnant, I thought! I took a test and sure enough... Several hours later I was struck by said apple (in this photo, the black eye was just starting to appear ~ it got purple-er and yellower and greener in later days), which made for an awkward moment when telling people I was pregnant. (Who wants to announce you're pregnant with a black eye!? Looks like the husband was not thrilled.) (Obviously, only to people who don't know my Matthew, come now!) I have noticed recently that I am a one-note song ("Lucas is cute! Lucas is cute!") so I thought it was high time to regail with tales about the Lentil. So there you go. There was the first day of our knowledge of his/her existence.

Tiny has taken to bringing us books to read him (including that giant one pictured above!), hoisting them up above his head to us and saying "pup pup pup." So we scoop him and read to him. (My grandma Lola, who can't see, makes up stories like "Oh my! Look at the dinosaur! The dinosaur eats naughty little boys! But not you, my golden boy!") I think there is maybe nothing so sweet and lovely as a sleepy little boy.

(I think that's what it looks like Lucas is saying, anyway.) As for me, I too am oohing and aahing because my son is talking more and more! He says "Pup pup pup" when he wants up (so cute) and of course still says papa, mama, daddy, guapo, and bravo. (Bravo meaning "hurray!", not angry.) The newest thing that has me floored though is to see that he's starting to understand me! Please see exhibit A!!

Picture One: Not noticing the socks on the ears...

Picture Two: Socks on the ears is the funniest joke in the world! (Or is this one even funnier...?)

Sunday, November 09, 2008

There are other,

perhaps more fitting (and certainly less blurry) pictures with which to announce our newest news. (That's right! I said news!) But this is my favorite because very much accidentally, our postures seemed to capture exactly how we feel. I am pregnant! Holy smokes completely wonderful I can't believe it wow!!!

So now that the cat's out of the bag...

My dad didn't know who won the election until yesterday night. He wanted to be the last American to find out, so he avoided every news outlet and told people in the shop to close their picos when they tried to talk politics. Alas, he was foiled. A nail through his foot forced him to go to the doctor (a day late and a toe short*) whereupon he heard those ladies on The View** talking about Sasha and Malia on the whitehouse lawn. The jig was up! All this to say, I can finally give my two cents about the election. More eloquent people than I have said powerful things about voting pro-life. I won't be redundant. So that aside, I just want to say that I am so thrilled to be alive to see the inauguration of our first black president. I think he's a good man with good intentions, and I hope that you will join me in praying that God would give him wisdom and discernment. This is too contained sounding; I want to sound bittersweet. I better give it up while I'm ahead.***

*A slight exaggeration.
**I assume it was The View. Who else would refuse to grant a simple request of silence?

Strange sightings have been made in the City of the Mound! Residents of Harrison Rd first noticed an enormous crop circle in their yard, where there was once a corn field. Upon closer inspection, they discovered two small spacemen lurking amidst the snapped stalks. The sky turned an eery shade that neighbors described as "hallucinogenic." What do these spacemen want? Only time will tell. -AP

Happy birthday little Fy!

This may not be the most flattering picture of my Fy ever taken. Certainly not the stateliest (and we all know he can pull off stately, can he not?) But look at those little paws, look at those ears, look at that little pink tongue and tell me he's not too much. Happy birthday, comrade!

at long last, Tiny has a tooth!!!

i wish i could remember what lucas and my grandma were laughing about in this picture, but nope! anyway, we love his new cockeyed smile. he looks a bit like a jack-o-lantern, don't you think?

Goodbye, sweet Darling.

Darling was one of the best kittens in the world. She wagged her tail, ran out to greet us when we arrived home, and would climb up my pantlegs and repose on my shoulder. She (along with Lorraine, of course) would go for mile-long walks with Matt and I through the pasture, sometimes getting a bit disorientated in the corn. She would climb the ladder and sit on the roof while the men worked. She never tired of Fyo pouncing on her. She was the sweetest bit of fluff in the world, and will be missed.

I mean truly,

I can only speak for myself, but I think that the birthday boy was looking so very handsome, and that his party was so very much fun!

Friday, October 17, 2008

It is Friday, October 17th, 2008! (And so far, being one seems to be pretty great.)

Tiny was laughing in his sleep last night, and then Matt joined in and started laughing in his sleep too. I can only imagine they were sharing a dream. I tried to find out from Lucas what it was, but he only said "Moo."

I love this boy.

Prior preparation prohibits poor performance

With Little Man's birthday party quickly upon us, we have been busy busy preparing for the party! I would show a before and after picture, but maybe you'll just have to come visit sometime. :)

Supper in the Goodfella house

Matt saw some food special on tv recently about Chicago's best hotdog stands, which has been on his mind ever since (he once told me "Oh mapache, your mind doesn't have one track, but it certainly doesn't have many." This is kind of like this, I think.) So needless to say we have been eating many delicious Chicago-style dogs lately, and guess who loves them most of all? That's right, Lucas! He goes crazy over the black olives and the banana peppers and the raw onions... We had to cut him off and give him some oatmeal after a while. After supper, he is always a very helpful little boy who pulls the freshly washed dishes out of the drying rack and scatters them across the kitchen floor. (He is a problem-solver, as you can see in Exhibit A. He climbs right up the rack if it's not readily available.)

sheepishly, oh so sheepishly,

i would like to invite you to lucas's birthday party! it's october 18th at 1:30ish at our place. you are probably thinking "this is the worst invitation ever, it doesn't even have my name on it." i know. it really is. :( so the real thing is, i know a lot of you who check this live far away and can't come, so here is my real purpose in writing: we are making lucas a time-capsule and i wonder if you want to submit something? we're going to bury it at his party, and then he gets to dig it up when he's 18. so, if you want to be a part of these shenanigans (juno almost ruined that word for me...and you?) please let me know and i'll give you the address. for those of you in the area, please email me your address so i can send you a real invitation. :)

the house!

let's be honest here: it's probably still got hobos in the basement, and i can only assume that the panther still prowls at night. and yet! it's just about the best house in the world.
ps. click on the picture! no link set up, it's just funny!

Here's to jumping the gun!

I probably should have kept this a surprise for the 31st, but I just could not. Lucas and Fyo are spacemen!
